Understanding the focus of attention in arthroscopic surgery

Arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder is used to treat a number of disorders such as repair of a torn tendon, rectifying chronic dislocation, and for diagnosis.  Arthroscopic shoulder surgery requires a high level of skill, which takes several years of training to achieve.  This is due to the needed detailed knowledge of shoulder anatomy combined with a high level of skill in hand-eye coordination to control the arthroscope and instruments such as tweezers, needle, and scissors.  Developing this expertise in students requires continuous supervision and feedback from an expert surgeon.  It is important to have objective assessment of the psychomotor skills so that surgical students can clearly understand their mistakes.  An important aspect of the psychomotor skill is the ability to focus attention on the appropriate areas of the surgical site during various stages of a procedure. More...

Mapping of Dengue Vector Breeding Sites from Street View Images

Google street view images are collected for various districts of Bangkok and object recognition is used to identify and count potential dengue vector breeding sites such as jars, flower pots, and old tires. A heat map shows the areas of highest concentration and allows users to zoom in to see details. Filters allow users to focus on particular types of breeding sites and on images of particular time periods. More...

Virtual Grasping

Demonstration of natural whole-hand interaction with virtual objects and different virtual cues for grasp control. Grasping is critical for applications requiring realistic interaction such as surgical simulation, manual assembly training, and vehicle design review. More...

Immersive Virtual Environment for Training of Dental Surgery

Users can practice steps in root canal procedure sitting at a virtual dental station. Instruments such as dental drill, mirror, and syringe are controlled by haptic devices to provide touch feedback. The simulation covers the stages of rubber dam application, anesthesia application, and drilling for access opening. Voice commands can be used to switch between instruments and to adjust the virtual patient. More...

Automated Segmentation of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Abdominal aortic aneurysm segmentation has an important role in predicting rupture risk and pre-operative planning of endovascular repair. Highly accurate segmentation of the aorta is achieved by using variable neighborhood search in which search alternates between density and gradient spaces. users can view 3D reconstructions of the aorta for a variety of severity of the disease. More...

Hip-Replacement Implantation Preparation Simulator

In cooperation with other German universities and medium-sized companies we are developing a simulation environment for hip replacement surgery. Our task in this project involves simulating realistic colliding physical behaviour when bone-mill and hip bone come in contact. Additionally, we are simulating the milling process of the bone material when it is drilled. More...
